How Yoga helps in correcting Metabolic syndrome.

I came across a study recently regarding the beneficial effects of Yoga on conditions linked to heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome, commonly known as symptom X, is a group of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

It is estimated that in the US,  approximately 34 percent of the adult population live with the condition.

Research on metabolic syndrome found lower blood pressure and a smaller waist circumference among those who undertook yoga for one year. Therefore, the researchers undertook a new study to examine the effect of one year of yoga in people with metabolic syndrome.

The study monitored the level and function of adipokines, which are hormones secreted by fat tissues and are involved in the regulation of appetite and satiety, energy expenditure, blood pressure, fat distribution and insulin secretion and others.

The results of the study demonstrated that weekly 3 hour yoga sessions for a year decreased proinflammatory adipokines and increased anti-inflammatory adi-pokine in adults with [metabolic syndrome] and high-normal blood pressure.”

“These findings support the beneficial role of yoga in managing [metabolic syndrome] by favorably modulating adipokines,” add the researchers.

The results of the study suggest that yoga could be a healthy lifestyle intervention that could decrease inflammation and help people with metabolic syndrome to manage their symptoms. (Ref: a study in the medicalnewstoday.com)
